About the California Agriculture Museum (CalAgMuseum): The Museum is a place to gather around art exhibits, kids and adult activities, and hundreds of old iron tractors, harvesters, horse drawn wagons and artifacts. It highlights stories from down on the farm that illuminate what it was like for California pioneers 100 years ago. The galleries and courtyard punctuate the significance of agriculture and the innovation that evolved yesterday and today.

          The Heidrick Ag History museum and event center is a non-profit cultural destination in Northern California, just minutes from Sacramento. The museum is dedicated to enhancing people’s understanding and appreciation of California’s rich heritage through the presentation of its antique tractor and agriculture collection and rotating exhibits. The Museum’s core collection was established by Fred Heidrick Senior and consists of rare examples of tractors, harvesters, trucks, autos, horse-drawn implements and other artifacts that tell the California story. The Museum continues to grow through the generosity of California growers and collectors. In order to sustain and support the museum’s growth, outreach and education programs, a large portion of the facility is dedicated to event rental space. Alongside weddings, corporate events and private parties, museum staff devote a lot of energy into producing at least two large fundraising events annually. Last year nearly 1,500 spectators attended the first annual Last Call Car Show in October, and nearly 4,000 spectators attended the YOLO Outdoor Expo in March. These events are great for not only the museum, but the entire surrounding community and supporting businesses. March is Museum Membership Month! Discounts on Several Sacramento Association Museums Including the Heidrick


On the heels of another successful Sacramento Museum Day, the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) has identified March 2015 as Museum Membership Month!  The benefits of museum membership often extend well beyond a financial savings and include exclusive experiences only available to members.  Plus, there’s something for everyone as the thriving Sacramento museum community offers memberships at virtually every museum and/or destination — from fine art and culture to native, exotic and endangered wildlife.

To highlight Museum Membership Month in March, many of the 30 museums are offering special incentives and discounts for enthusiasts who choose to become members of their favorite museums and destinations.  A few limited-time offers include the following:

  • Heidrick Ag History & Events Center — 10 percent off all new memberships in March along with a free one-day admission pass to share with a friend;

The ag museum gets artsy

tractor sculpture 2015Although tractors may not traditionally bring artistic visions to mind, the Heidrick Ag History Center appreciates art as much as the next collector. In the coming year the museum will add several art additions, including the installation of a captivating metal tractor sculpture outside, as well as, a proposed rotating art gallery exhibit inspired by agriculture called “Art Alley”.

In order to complete this vision, the museum is seeking donation of a non-functioning, early twentieth century tractor.

“We saw a tractor sculpture that we really like; after some brainstorming we have been working with city officials to create a local landmark ,” Executive Director Lorili Ostman said, “It is about 20-feet tall, and it will have a total of three tractors on it.”

Ostman explained that the museum has two of the three pieces needed to complete the sculpture , a Caterpillar 22 and a Cletrac, but needs one more larger piece for the top.

The museum is looking for pieces such as these to showcase as part of the sculpture. They do not need to be in working condition. Please contact 530-666-9700 if you are interested in making a donation!

“The two tractors we have will appear to climb the pillars of a metal a-frame pillar, and our hope is that someone will have something just a little bigger that represents another transition of early tractors,” she continued, “We only need a tractor skeleton, no engine of working parts.”

Although the museum will release more details regarding “Art Alley” in the coming months, the curatorial team is busy working to designate a portion of the museum to agriculture inspired art with rotating art exhibitions, featuring paintings, photography, and sculpture by local and regional artists. Look for the Heidrick Ag History Center to be fundraising for the exhibit at First Friday Art Walks at the Barth building at 423 First Street in downtown Woodland.

1920s busesThe Heidrick Ag History Center recently added five new pieces to their already extensive display of rare agricultural history — five fully functioning passenger buses built to replicate eras of the teens and twenties. The 1912, 10 passenger Rambler; 1918, nine passenger Packard; 1921, 21 passenger Franklin; 1924, 21 passenger White Yellow Stone; and 1929 11 passenger, Ford AA were all built and used by Mr. Toad’s Tours of San Francisco, and have now been donated to become a display of early twentieth century school transportation for rural students. In the early 1900’s, most rural areas of the United States were served by one-room classroom schools, requiring students to travel by horse-drawn vehicles called “kid hacks,” short for hackney carriage.  A typical kid hack would serve all the farms in the area of the school, and usually transport under 20 children. As early as 1914, trucks such as the Rambler and Ford Model AA on on exhibit were considered to be the predecessor to the modern yellow school bus, when detachable wooden hacks were placed on modernizing motor trucks, however, it wasn’t until 1932 that Gillig manufactured an all-steel school bus, complete with safety glass windows, built on a White truck chassis just like the one now included in the exhibit.

In the future the museum would like to use these road-worthy vehicles to showcase in local parades, events and farm tours, however insurance and DMV fees are estimated in the thousands of dollars range for each. This will only be possible with local support through memberships and private donations. Guests Can Enjoy Free or Half-Priced Admission to Nearly 25 Sites!

With nearly 25 museums and local destinations participating, the 2015 Sacramento Museum Day is proudly presented by Bank of America and Sacramento Covered. To the delight of the greater Sacramento area community, the participating local museums will offer free or half-priced admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015, during the 17th annual event.  Most of the nearly 25 museums will offer free admission whereas two destinations located in residential areas — the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town — will offer half-priced admission to offset traffic control and security costs.

Coordinated by the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) and the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sacramento Museum Day is a popular cultural tradition designed to encourage all members of the community to experience the Capital City’s incredible wealth of art, history, science and wildlife — at little or no cost.  Many of the museums are within walking distance of each other and easily accessible via public transportation. Event coordinators suggest that guests plan to visit no more than two or three different museums on this day in order to allow adequate time to enjoy the experience and to travel between individual sites.

In addition to offering free or reduced cost admission, many of the destinations are offering special activities during Sacramento Museum Day.  A sampling of the special activities include the following:

“Every year is unique and offers new discoveries for guests to explore on Sacramento Museum Day,” said Sacramento Association of Museums Chair Kristina Swanson. “We’d like to thank our new sponsors – Bank of America and Sacramento Covered – for helping us to present this important event and introduce the community to the amazing array of arts, culture and museum offerings available in the greater Sacramento region.”

While admission is free at most of the participating museums during Sacramento Museum Day, admission to two destinations located in residential areas are half-priced as follows:  Sacramento Zoo is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 2-11 and free for children under two;  Fairytale Town is $2.75 per person and free for children ages one and under.

Part-time Administrative & Member Benefit Specialist

help wantedUnder the general supervision of the Executive Director, this position provides a variety of administrative support to the museum and event center.  This position researches and gathers data to generate a variety of reports; actively develops and maintains positive relationships with members and partners; provides information to the public and staff; deals with a diverse group of external and internal contacts at all levels of an organization; some independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload to plan and accomplish goals; performs a variety of other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

  • Provides support and administrative assistance to the Executive Director.
  • Processes memberships/donors, creates reports, enters data, sends renewals, establishes hard copy and digital files and data and participates in member cultivation.
  • Processes and coordinates the documentation for acquisitions at each level of paper, digital, IRS filing, and archival documents with the ability to understand/learn IRS regulations governing these transactions.
  • Coordinate and follow through with office maintenance as prioritized by the Executive Director.  Maintains files, schedules, and invoice processing.
  • Collects volunteer data, cultivates and coordinates general volunteer activity.
  • Coordinates activities (calendar, travel, logistics, meeting materials, etc.) for the Executive Director.
  • Composes and prepares correspondence; handles email and/or regular mail.
  • Coordinates and processes mail and invoices.
  • Proofreads documents to ensure accuracy of copy, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Makes revisions and finalizes documents for distribution.
  • Oversees meeting logistics.
  • Regularly performs significant and recurring administrative tasks with high degree of initiative and independence, and with great attention to detail on numerous projects.
  • Reads and demonstrates an understanding and adherence to Heidrick values, policies, and practices. Ability to establish up-to-date guidelines pertaining to the position.

The museum remembers Nancy Gnoss

The love for Nancy Ann (Heidrick) Gnoss was tangibly abundant this past week, as more than 600 relatives, friends and even acquaintances filled the Heidrick Ag History Center museum and banquet hall to celebrate her life on January 10. Although we will miss Nancy’s spirit at the museum, we are honored to have been part of this large gathering. Nancy will always be here in the hearts of many.

Born to our museum’s founders Fred Sr. and Helen Heidrick, Nancy is near and dear to the our heart. Fred, along with his brother, Nancy’s Uncle Joe, were inventive and passionate. Their collection and restoration evolved into what is now the Heidrick Ag History Center in Woodland.

Nancy was family woman who loved unconditionally. She is remembered by those close to her as a pillar in the community, who displayed the true meaning of family.

The museum appreciates her devotion to the preservation of California’s agricultural history, and continued contributions through her family.
